In short, our society – particularly Western society – has made it easier and easier to get by with limited responsibilities, commitments or genuine in-person relationships.  Our increasing emphasis on social media and video games is making “real life” less appealing and more difficult to engage with.

Kids today are no longer working on the farm and witnessing first hand how difficult life can be, instead they are dwelling in alternate realities portrayed on smart phones and big screen TVs.

A few of the requirements to alleviate suffering according to Peterson are:

  • Nobility
  • Courage
  • Focus
