Pilates Breathing

TweetPilates exercises are based on a special system of breathing that helps you ventilate your lungs while doing the exercises and at the same time keep your abs contracted. This breathing technique can seem quite difficult the first time you try it but after several trainings you will feel absolutely natural breathing this way.
Pilates breathing is also called lateral or intercostal breathing. When you inhale through the nose your chest expands to the sides and when you exhale through your mouth it contracts just like an accordion. This breathing is important for all Pilates exercises because it allows you to keep your abs tight while performing all the exercises and flattening your stomach. When you try to perform Pilates exercises you usually exhale when you need the most ab contraction or when you need the most control in the exercise. Feel free to watch the video with detailed instructions on Pilates breathing and try this technique yourself.
Keep it balanced!

Hello,
Great post and video! Side/back breathing is one of the most important and yet most difficult parts of Pilates to master.
Lynda, thanks for the feedback. I am glad that people find information on my website useful.
